How to Know
With all the uncertainties in life, Is there anything in this world
that you can know for sure?
There is one thing in this life that you can know for sure! The Bible tells us in I John 5:13, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
There is one thing in this life that you can know for sure and that is whether you possess eternal life or not. So how do we know if we possess eternal life? In Verse twelve of I John, it says this regarding eternal life, “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” There are two people in this world, those who have the Son and those who do not have the Son. The Son in this verse is God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
We read further in John 3:16-18 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
Again we see two different people, those who have believed on the Son and those who have not. Let me tell you about each of these people.
First, the person who has Jesus Christ possess eternal life and is not condemned. Eternal life refers to your soul when your physical body dies. Everyone’s soul will live for eternity after physical death. What matters and what these verses are talking about is where your soul will live. The believer will be in heaven with God for eternity.
Second, the person who has not believed on Jesus Christ does not have eternal life and it condemned already. What does it mean to be condemned already? You can think about it like this. Being condemned already is like being on death row. A person has been found guilty of a crime punishable by the death penalty and has been sentenced to death. A death row inmate can sit on death row for years walking around alive but is under the penalty and sentence of the judicial system. This is the person who has not believed on Jesus Christ. They are living their life already sentenced guilty in God’s court and are awaiting that fateful date of death where they will meet God face to face to give an account of their sin to Him.
You may be thinking, How can a person be walking around on earth already sentenced guilty? What have they done to deserve that? That is a great question. The Bible
helps us in Romans 3:10-12,“as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” Verse twenty-three goes on to say “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Now you may hear that and be like me. I thought I was a pretty good person. I had never killed anyone and tried to do somewhat right. Surely I deserved to go to heaven.
Let me ask you a few questions that you can answer to yourself honestly:
Have you ever stolen anything regardless of its value?
What do we call a person who has stolen something? A thief.
Have you ever told a lie in your life?
What do we call a person who has lied? A liar.
Have you ever been jealous and wanted something someone else had?
Have you ever lusted after another person?
Jesus tells us that a person who does this has committed adultery with that person in their heart.
This is just four of the ten commandments. How do you stand up? I do not know about you but if you are like me you are guilty of each of these. I have broken these laws multiple times in my life. Jesus tells us that if we have ever hated another person then that is the same a murder. Ouch! Right?
This is God’s law. This is the law that we will be judged against and makes us condemned already. Just breaking this law one time means we are guilty of the entire law. James 2:13 says “for whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”
Ok. Do you see standing against God’s law that we are guilty and punishable? God does not leave us here condemned already without help. So what do we do?
Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” God gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for you and me. Romans 5:8 tells us “but God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus Christ paid your penalty for sin on the cross.
God has a gift for you. What do you do with a gift? Either you accept it or you do not. There is nothing you can do to earn it.
Ephesians 2:8-10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Accepting this gift is what gives a person eternal life. This is where the difference comes into play between the two people. This is what determines which category you fall into.
How do you accept this gift? Remember that John talked about the one who believes has eternal life. This believing is accepting the gift. You must believe that you are a sinner and have broken God’s law. You must believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again. The Bible tells us this about believing on Jesus Christ in Romans 10:9-10, “ that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Verse thirteen goes on to say, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Right now, which person are you? Have you believed on Jesus Christ? The Bible says you can know that you have eternal life. If you have not, you can call upon him right now. There is no certain place or time to do it. Just speak to God from your heart telling him you are a sinner and are guilty. Tell Him you believe that Jesus Christ died and rose again for you. Ask Him to save you.
If you have believed on Jesus Christ you are not condemned. You possess eternal life and will spend eternity with God in heaven when you die. The Bible says in II Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Now it is time to grow.
