Is it ok for a Christian to doubt?

By: Kyle Austin

I'm sure you are wondering if you should be ashamed or embarrassed because you are doubting. You may be wondering if doubting makes you less of a Christian or if you have fallen off into unbelief because of the doubt. None of these are true. Doubt is not unbelief rather it is the halfway stage. You are in the middle trying to decide whether to believe or not. So is it ok for a Christian to doubt?

Absolutely...but with one condition.

The condition is that you work to get answers for whatever you are doubting about. It's not okay to doubt and not give God an opportunity or yourself the chance to remove or resolve the doubt. You can only doubt what you believe. The very essence of faith produces questions to a believer and doubt is working through the questions. Doubt is not a dirty five-letter word.  Doubt is not some dark struggle that we need to keep secret. If we are honest, all believers experience doubt at varying times and in varying degrees in their faith life.

Notice Jesus' response to those who doubted in scripture.

Think about all the examples of people in scripture who doubted. Two examples stand out in the New Testament. Thomas who is often referred to as "doubting Thomas" and John the Baptist. You could really call Thomas a realist because he just wanted to see to believe. He said, "Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe." I can relate to him.

John the Baptist began doubting after hard circumstances came into his life. He found himself sitting in prison for doing what was right and standing for truth. In prison he began to have doubts so he sent two of his disciples to Jesus and asked, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?" In his doubt, he was questioning if Jesus was actually the Savior that he had believed in.

In both instances Jesus did not respond with disgust, by telling them they were wrong, or by making them feel embarrassed or ashamed. Instead, His response was to help them through their doubts and to fix the missing element in their faith. Thomas needed to see to believe so Jesus showed him His hands and His side and told him to touch the wounds. John the Baptist just needed to take time to remember. Jesus sent back the two disciples to tell John, "Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them." Remembering these facts resolved John's doubt and strengthened his faith.

Resolved doubt can lead to tremendous growth.

Doubting can actually be a very beautiful thing when it's handled because resolved doubt can lead to tremendous growth. Young people coming out of high school begin to take everything they have been taught and formulate what they are going to make their own. This transition time offers a lot of opportunity for doubt to creep but this does not have to be a bad thing. If it is dealt with and answers are sought, it can actually be a beautiful process that produces great growth. We have witnessed numerous young people struggle with doubts during this stage trying to formulate what they believe and come out so much stronger on the other side. Many of these "doubting Christians" are being used tremendously in the church and workplace today! I believe strongly that the doubts are what God used to strengthen their faith.

Don't be afraid to talk about your doubts.

Don't remain silent about doubt. That is exactly what Satan wants you to do. He wants you to feel ashamed so that doubt will  compound upon doubt and compound upon doubt until the very foundation of your faith begins to erode away. Open up and talk about the doubts you are experiencing. Seek help in finding answers. As you open up with your struggles, you will be amazed at how others will open up about their doubts. If they have resolved doubt in an area you are currently doubting, they can share their story of how they got answers and resolved it.

Don't be afraid to come to God with any hard questions. He will not be surprised at all because He already knows what you're struggling with. The Christian faith is not built on fairy tales and make-believe. There is insurmountable evidence available all around us that provides proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Take the time to discover that evidence for yourself.
