What is God doing about the evil & suffering?

By: Kyle Austin

In this question we want to discover what God's answer is to all the evil and suffering that's in our world today. Lets consider two quick thoughts.

There is coming a day when God will judge people for the evil they have committed and the suffering they have caused.

Justice delay does not mean that justice is denied. God is delaying justice for a reason which is His love and compassion for people to come to Him for salvation. 2 Peter 3:9 tells us, "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." God is delaying the judgment but there will be a day when that ends and judgment comes.

Jesus Christ is the supreme example of what God is doing about evil.

Think about this. God Himself left His place and came down to earth where there is suffering and where there is evil. Jesus Christ came down to experience and feel all the evil and suffering that you and I face in our lives.

Peter Kreeft, author of Making Sense out of Suffering said, “He himself entered into all the agony, he himself bore all the pain of this world, and that’s unimaginable and shattering and even more impressive than the divine power of creating the world in the first place. Just imagine every single pain in the history of the world, all rolled together into a ball, eaten by God, digested, fully tasted, eternally. How could you not love this being that went the extra mile, who practiced more than he preached, who entered into our world, who suffers our pains, who offers himself in the midst of our sorrows? What more could he do?”

What is God doing about the evil and suffering in our world today? God gave His only son, Jesus Christ, as a remedy to the evil and suffering. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Really the next question that needs to be asked is, "What have you done with His remedy? Have you accepted or taken the remedy that God has offered in Jesus Christ"

When you die you're going to spend an eternity somewhere. There are two options: one is eternal life in Heaven with God or the other is eternal life in Hell separated from God. Why would a person spend an eternity in Hell when he or she dies? God has a law that all people will be judged by. Remember justice delayed does not mean justice is denied. There is coming today when God is going to judge all people based on His law. Let me ask you a few questions to see how you stand against God's law.

  • Have you ever one time in your life taken something regardless of its value? God's law says, "Thou shall not steal."
  • Have you ever one time in your life wanted something that somebody else had? That is jealousy or coveting and God's law says, "Thou shalt not covet."
  • Have you ever one time in your life lied? No matter how big or small the lie was? God's law says, "Thou shall not bear false witness."
  • Have you ever one time in your life disobeyed your mom, dad, or guardian? God's law  says, "Honour thy father and thy mother."

Can I say that I have broken these laws many times in my life! I am guilty. The question for you to answer is this: If you stood before God on judgment day would you be innocent or would you be guilty of breaking His law? So what do you and I do?

God does't leave us helpless in this predicament. He provided a remedy in Jesus Christ by Him dying on the cross and resurrecting. God offers you the gift of eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ. In order to receive the gift we must call on Jesus Christ to save us. The Bible tells us in Romans 10:13, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." So call out to Him to save you and give you the gift of eternal life. When you take the gift of eternal like you are taking God's remedy to all the evil and suffering.

Evil and suffering will only last for the short time we are here on earth. As believers, once we die and go to heaven there is no more evil and suffering! Therefore evil and suffering are only temporary but you must have His remedy. Have you believed on Jesus Christ? If not you can do that now. Call out to Him and ask Him to save you from your sins.
